Bruce Shumaker

Bruce Shumaker Bruce Shumaker wanted to be a wrestling coach since his junior year in high school. He was born and raised in northwestern Pennsylvania and wrestled for Redbank Valley High School. He was the team captain in 1970 and won 65% of his high school bouts. Bruce attended Edinboro State College and was a Tri-Captain in 1973 and 1974. While at Edinboro he won 71% of his college bouts. In 1973, Shumaker was the Pennsylvania Freestyle State runner-up and was awarded the Outstanding Wrestler in the 1976 Virginia State AAU meet. Shumaker's coaching career spans more than three decades and has been full of great opportunities and one adventure after another. While at Denbigh High School from 1975-1980 he had a 38-26 record and was named the Peninsula District Coach of the Year in 1975 and again in 1978. In 1981, Bruce was the assistant coach at VMI. From there he was the head coach at Natural Bridge High School from 1982-1987 and had a record of 45-27. In 1989 Bruce took over the head coaching position at Mathews High School and remained there until 1997 when he moved to Lafayette High school. While at Matthews High School, Shumaker had a 118-48 record. His wrestling team was the Regional Champion in 1989, 90, 91, 92 and 94. Mathews was the State Champion in 1990 and 1991 and the runner-up in 1987. Bruce was named the Virginia High School League Coach of the Year in 1992. In 2000, 2001 and 2004 Lafayette was the Regional Champion. Coach Shumaker was named the Bay Rivers District Coach of the Year in 1999, 2000, and 2004. He has coached 19 Individual State Champions, 9 State Runner-ups and his overall career dual meet record is 315-130. Bruce Shumaker was the team leader and head coach for the USA wrestling exchange to Puerto Rico in 1992 and the Down Under Games in Surfer's Paradise, Australia in 2001. Shumaker finished his career as the head coach of the Apprentice School in Newport News, VA.
