E. Andrew "Drew" Bright After championship careers as an athlete at North Hunterdon Regional High School in Annandale, New Jersey and the College of William and Mary, Drew Bright began what would become more than a 30 year career as the wrestling coach at Douglas Freeman High School in Richmond, Virginia in 1973. His successes include a dual meet mark of 425 wins, which, as of the 2004 season, was the most wins of any high school wrestling coach in the Commonwealth of Virginia. His teams won 18 district championships and 11 regional championships. Bright's teams placed in the top ten at the AAA State Championships ten times. Individual wrestlers won 109 district titles, 38 regional titles, and there were 30 state place winners, including two 2-time state champions. Coach Bright's wrestlers went on to wrestle at many colleges and universities including William and Mary, the University of Virginia, the University of North Carolina, Northwestern University, Virginia Tech, the United States Naval Academy, George Mason University and James Madison University. Two of his wrestlers participated in the NCAA Division I Championships. Coach Bright served as commissioner of the Metropolitan Youth Wrestling program for more than 20 years. He also served on the Virginia High School League state advisory committee for wrestling. Drew was recognized as the Virginia State Coach of the year in 1977 and again in 2003. He was the Region 3 Coach of the Year and was one of eight finalists for National Coach of the year in 1997. Coach Bright's proudest moments continue to be the contributions of his wrestlers to their families and their communities.
