William White

Bill White is known throughout New York State as one of the true gentlemen of our sport. Oh, he compiled a pretty good record as a coach too. Bill began coaching in 1964 as the varsity coach at Newburgh Free Academy. In 1966 he became the assistant varsity coach at Suffern High School. He assumed the head coaching duties there in 1970, and stayed there until his retirement in 1988. Bill's career record is 185-59-2. His teams won five sectional team titles and eight Rockland County team titles. They produced thirty-two sectional champions, and seven of his wrestlers placed in New York State Tournament competitions. Many of Bill's wrestlers distinguished themselves in collegiate competition. A partial listing of his alumni include: Bob Woods who captained the Montclair State team in 1977, Mike Parietti who captained the U.S. Military Academy team in 1984, Bill White (our honoree's son) who captained the Syracuse University team in 1985, Dan Parietti who also captained the West Point cadets in 1985, Leo Crew who captained the team at Lafayette University in 1985, John Canty who captained the St. Lawrence University team in 1988, Dennis Walsh who wrestled for Penn State from 1984 to 1988, and Jerald Vanderput who also wrestled for the Nittany Lions from 1989 to 1991.
