Dusty Rhodes
Dusty Rhodes finished his high school career with a state title at 125 lbs. for Osage in 1992, after a third place finish in 1991 and a qualifier in 1990. He went on to wrestle at Wartburg College and was an All American in 1995 and 1996 coached by HOF Coach Jim Miller. In 1997, Dusty was a National Champion for Wartburg College.
Dusty began his coaching career at Pocahontas Area in 1999-2003 and attained a record of 52-9. He took on the head coaching responsibilities at Mason City High School from 2003-2022. His coaching record was 193-180, bringing his career record to 248-193. During this time, his teams won four sectional titles and four district titles. His squads qualified for the State Duals in 2001, 2002, and 2011. They also qualified for Regional Duals eight times. His squad won conference titles in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2008, 2011, and 2013.
Coaching awards presented to Dusty are CIML Coach of the Year in 2005, 2008, and 2011, North Central District Coach of the Year in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008, and 3A Coach of the Year in 2008. Dusty was selected for the Wartburg Hall of Fame in 2021. Dusty has also coached six NJCAA National tournament qualifiers and four NAIA qualifiers and place winners. Dusty was the coach for two-time NCAA III National Champion Aaron Wernimont.
Dusty has had 91 State Qualifiers, eight champions, seven runner-ups, four 3rd place finishers, six 4th place finishers, five 5th place finishers, five 6th place finishers, four 7th place finishers, and seven 8th place finishers. Dusty resigned from coaching in 2022 to accept an Associate Principal position at Mason City High School.
