Doug Rasmusson

Doug "Raz" Rasmusson is a 1979 graduate of Hazel Park High School, Hazel Park, Michigan. Doug earned his B.S. from Eastern Michigan University in 1983 and his M.S. from Nova University in 1986. His father, Melvin Rasmusson, was the head wrestling coach at Detroit Catholic Central High School and then Warren Lincoln High School. At the age of 5, while his father was the coach at Warren Lincoln, Doug began wrestling, eventually placing as high as 3rd in the AAU Nationals. After graduating from Eastern Michigan University in December 1983, Doug moved to West Palm Beach, Florida where he began his teaching and coaching career at Roosevelt Jr. High School. Since Palm Beach County didn't have middle school wrestling, he started an intramural program at Roosevelt Jr. High. His teaching career continued as he moved from Roosevelt Jr. High to Jerry Thomas Elementary & Limestone Creek Elementary where he stayed for 15 years. He took an assistant wrestling coach position at Dwyer High School in Palm Beach Gardens for a year and then took over the wrestling program at Jupiter High School in the mid-1990's where he has been the head coach for 25 years. Doug has been teaching at Jupiter High School since 2005. In 2013 Doug married his wonderful wife Millie. He has two sons from a previous marriage, Christian and Hans, both of whom he coached in football and wrestling at Jupiter High School. His son Christian has been coaching with him since 2008 and his son Hans served as a clinician while wrestling in college. Doug and Millie have a blended family that include Millie's daughter Denise and her son Hector. Doug also coached his wife, Millie's grandsons, Devon and Dolan, at Jupiter High School. Both Hans and Devon wrestled in D1 college programs: Hans at Arizona State University and Devon at American University. It is important to note that even though his teams at Jupiter High School have responded greatly to his leadership, more important is what wrestling and his leadership and mentoring has done for the young men Doug has coached through the years. Many have excelled in the business world and several of them have come back to assist at Jupiter High School. When others are in the area they come in and roll around with the team. Several of his past wrestlers have written to him stating how much wrestling and Doug's leadership have helped them get where they are in life. At Jupiter High School the wrestling program became a consistently dominant force in Palm Beach County and in Florida. Under Doug's leadership at Jupiter High School the team has won 332 dual meets, had 2 state champions, 2 state runners-up, 15 place in the top 6, and over 50 state qualifiers with many wrestlers continuing on to wrestle in D1, D2, D2 & NAIA college programs. The team has won 7 district titles, 6 district runners-up, 1 regional runner-up, 16 conference championships, and 2 Palm Beach County Championships. Doug has been running wrestling tournaments since he was a teenager. For the last 24 years, Jupiter High School has hosted what has become one of Florida's largest wrestling tournaments, The John Raich Memorial. Each year, Doug runs many tournaments throughout the area. Because of his knowledge of and experience with the NFHS, FHSAA, & MHSAA rule books he has acted as a mentor for many high school coaches in Florida and in Michigan. Accolades bestowed on Doug include: 2013 Palm Beach County Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee, FACA 25 Years of Service Award, 2 NWCA Distinguished Coach Awards (2013 & 2018), Award of Distinction United States Navy Seal Museum, 11 Conference Coach of the Year titles (Wrestling), 4 Conference Coach of the Year titles (Weightlifting), 5 Coach's Sportsmanship Awards, 2 Sun Sentinel Coach of the Year titles, and 1 Palm Beach Post Coach of the Year. He has run summer wrestling camps and youth wrestling programs for many years as well. Every season begins with Doug telling his team the three following statements that he has coached by: "There is more to wrestling than winning and losing. Wrestling is about life and how to live it to the fullest," "You only lose if you don't learn anything from the match," and finally "You can't win if you are afraid to lose." Doug's love for wrestling and his wrestlers extends beyond the mat and outside the doors of the gym. He has lived these statements, and hundreds of wrestlers have taken these lessons with them as they begin successful lives.
