To read the story of Lucy Stowe is to understand what it takes to bring all those wrestlers, coaches, officials, and spectators together around the mats. She has contributed in every unsung, backstage way imaginable to serve wrestling: playing the various roles of team mom, volunteer (with an emphasis on matchmaking/pairing), information manager (including data entry and program booklets), and lately, officer in various wrestling organizations. Born in 1954, Lucy Haymes graduated from Danville HS in 1972, then proceeded to Danville Community and Averett colleges. Marriage to Randall, family, and wrestling put pause to her education until 1990, when she received her degree from St. Leo college (summa cum laude). With the launch of son Randy's wrestling career in 1983, both mom and dad went full tilt into wrestling, Lucy starting as team mom for Tabb Youth Wrestling, the Grafton Grapplers, and the York Junior Falcons. Randy's triumph as state champion for Tabb HS in 1994 only spurred Lucy on to greater efforts. Her pattern has been to volunteer for the out-of-the-limelight essentials of running events, then to deepen her commitment. She says that she "found her niche" in the often stressful but essential job of pairing matches and organizing bout sheets for tournaments, a task at which she excelled for USA wrestling, youth tournaments, and 30 VHSL events. Her verbal abilities transferred easily to the composition and editing of event programs, for organizations such as Peninsula Youth League Wrestling, Virginia Challenge, and the Virginia Duals. Finally, she took on major responsibilities in wrestling administration. She has served (and often continues to serve) as secretary for the Peninsula Wrestling Association, as Vice President for Virginia Challenge, and Commissioner/President of the Peninsula Youth Wrestling League. She is either a Lifetime Member or a member of the Board for all these organizations. And did we mention that she has officiated USA Wrestling since 1999? With seemingly limitless energy, she (with Randall) has found time to host more than 30 European exchange students, raise three kids, and be "Gammie" to four grandchildren.
