Randall Stowe

Randall Stowe, born (in 1952) and raised in Danville, VA, grew up at a time when wrestling was far less organized and provided fewer opportunities for competition than today. Nevertheless, he was drawn to the sport as early as fifth grade, when he caught the bug at a local YMCA clinic. At Tunstall HS, wrestling was not adopted until his junior year, when he joined with such enthusiasm that he became an informal student-coach. At Danville CC and Virginia Tech, he amassed some impressive credentials in preparation to be an electrical engineer, while meeting, courting, and marrying Lucy, the love of his life for 43 years and counting. After his graduation in 1975 and some post-graduate courses and tests, his career path was set: he went to work at Norfolk Naval Rework Facility for nine years in radar and avionics, followed by 34 years at the Newport News Shipyard (in R & D, submarines, and aircraft carriers). The arrival of Randall, Jr., (Randy) reconnected him to wrestling. During Randy's early years in the Tabb HS youth team, the Stowes "became a family fully involved in the sport of wrestling." Randall coached, ran several rookie events and league championships, and later served as president of the club; Lucy stepped in as team mom and matchmaker; and the two girls, Michelle and Christina, were youth wrestlers, score keepers, and team managers. After Randy ended his high school wrestling with a state championship, he joined his father as a referee in the Peninsula Wrestling Officials Association. Randall made a long-term commitment to officiating, eventually representing the Southeastern Wrestling Officials Association in the VHSL State Tournament of 2016. He has worked many events in VA as well as freestyle and Greco contests for USA Wrestling as far afield as GA and FL. Recently retired, Randall still enjoys the wrestling scene with Lucy, but now devotes much time as "Poppy" for grandchildren AnnieMae, Olivia, Isaac, and Riley. One of his future goals is to organize or sponsor an introductory wrestling short clinic in order to, as he says, "highlight the competitive nature of our sport to new participants, future fans, and volunteers."
