Dave Mitchell

1978-2017 Tonasket High School 1985-2017 Tonasket Middle School David Mitchell is part of a long time wrestling family in the state of Washington where he and his four brothers all wrestled at Issaquah High School for Hall of Fame Coach Roger Wilson. Mitchell qualified for the state tournament in 1970, placing 2nd in 1971 and winning the state title in 1972. He was a member of the 1971 Washington State Cultural Exchange team to Japan and in 1972 was selected as a first team High School All-American. Mitchell then wrestled for three years at the University of Washington placing 2nd in the Pac-8 in 1976, then finished wrestling at Central Washington University his senior year. Following graduation from Central Washington University, Mitchell began his 39 year teaching and coaching career at Tonasket High School. Under his leadership he established a dynasty at Tonasket High School. His teams placed in the Top Ten at the State Tournament 17 times including one 4th Place, five 3rd Place, three 2nd Place finishes culminating with a State Team Championship in 2017. He also coached 93 state placers and 34 state champions including his three sons, Martin who became the second 4 time state champion in state history, Kevin a two-time champion and Patrick who won one state championship. The Mitchell family - Dave, his brothers and three sons, have earned ten Washington State Wrestling Championship Gold Medals. Coach Mitchell, Mr. Wrestling in Tonasket was a master technician and motivator developing the wrestling program in Tonasket from top to bottom. He coached the high school, middle school, kids wrestling and freestyle club. He has coached ten years with the Washington State Cadet and Junior National teams while also serving as an assistant football coach in both the high school and middle school. Mitchell coached the cultural exchange team to the U.S.S.R. in 1987. Coach Mitchell has been recognized by his peers numerous times having been selected the Regional Coach of the Year in 1995, 1998 and 2001 and honored as the State Coach of the Year in 1998 and 2001. He was inducted into the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2010. Mitchell retired from teaching and coaching in 2017. Dave and his wife Brenda still reside in Tonasket where he now farms alfalfa and rides his horses. The have three adult children, Martin (35), Patrick (33), and Kevin (31). The have three grandsons, Carson (2), Graham (1) and Ryden (6months).
