Richard Schmertzler

Dick Schmertzler was a highly successful wrestler before he graduated in 1969 from Georgetown High School in Delaware. He was a two time Delaware State Champion and was named as the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler in 1968. His three year varsity record was 43-3-1. He continued his education at Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) where he dominated again on the mats. Dick won four straight Mason Dixon Championships and was named the Outstanding Wrestler in 1972. He was also an All-Maryland Tournament Champion. Dick was featured in the Sports Illustrated-Faces in the Crowd in 1973. He was also inducted into the Western Maryland College Hall of Fame and honored in 2000 by being chosen for the All Millennium Team in the state of Delaware. After his outstanding wrestling career, Dick turned his attention to officiating for the MWOA (Maryland Wrestling Officials Association). Besides being a top level official, Dick has served in many capacities and has held various offices within that organization over the last 35 years. He has refereed the Navy Classic for 21 years. In addition to this event, Dick has worked the Colonial, Southern and Centennial Conference Tournaments. He's officiated every level of state competition. He's been recognized twice as the top official at the MPSSAA Tournament, always finishing near the top. Dick brings knowledge, fairness and consistency to the mat. When he steps on the line as an official, you know you're going to get his best effort and a well officiated match. Dick is deeply committed to his community, working on numerous organizations including the local Selective Service Board for 20 years. He is also the secretary of the Hasslinger's Veterans Organization. In addition, he is a sponsor for the Wounded Warriors (AUSA) and has volunteered at the Soldiers Santa Ball and the Empty Stocking Events. Moreover, Dick is also a blood donor for the American Red Cross. Dick is the Project Manager for the Office Relocation Group. He lives in Bel Air, Maryland with his wife Gwen. They have 3 adult children: Sabrina, Richard and Rebecca and 2 Grandchildren: Jacob and Adalyn.
