Tom Fitch

Tom Fitch's wrestling career started in Upstate New York at North Syracuse High School in 1964-5. Three years later, Tom was Section 3 finalist where he lost to the eventual New York State Champion. In college, at nearby State University at Oswego, Tom had an exceptional career. As a freshman in 1968, he won the prestigious Plebe Tournament at West Point. At that time, freshman could not participate in varsity sports, so that this tournament attracted the best Division I, II and III wrestlers on the east coast. He followed up that accomplishment on the varsity, by winning the New York State Division III State University of NY Tournament in all 3 years. Tom's commitment to the sport continued in 1971 during his first year of teaching in Baltimore County. He started officiating with the MWOA and continued to do that on a high level for 40 years. Anyone who has followed Maryland Wrestling will recognize Tom because he has refereed county, regional, state and MIAA events many times over the years. He also served in many leadership roles including Vice President of the MWOA in 1988 and several times on the assignment committee. Tom also served 10 years on the testing committee. Although he retired as an active official in 2011, he still contributes to and is a member of the MWOA in good standing. On top of his busy teaching & officiating schedule, Tom also coached extensively. He was the head coach at the Maryland School for the Blind from 1974-1978. He was assistant coach at Kenwood High School for 20 years. Last year, he was a volunteer coach at Boys Latin Middle School. Tom was flexible enough to work with beginning wrestlers and skilled enough to raise the level of some of the best high school talent. This was certainly evident at Kenwood as they produced many county, regional and state champions during his tenure. Tom lives in Baltimore with his wife, Cecelia. He has 4 children: Patrick, Hollis, Justin and Josh and one grandchild: Claire.
