Bill Mackey

Bill was born and raised in Michigan, and in 1966 he began a truly remarkable wrestling and officiating career that has spanned more than 50 years. It all began in his sophomore year at Catholic Central High School in Detroit, where he was "Taught Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge" by the Basilian Fathers. In the fall of 1967 Mike Rodriguez (2X All-American, 1972 National Coach of the Year and 1990 inductee into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame) entered the wrestling room as the new head coach. Coach "Rod" served as father, role model, mentor, spiritual advisor and coach to thousands of young men, including Bill, and sparked in him a passion for our great sport, sending him on a life-long journey in wrestling. Bill was a member of the 1969 Michigan High School State Championship team, which was the first of 13 state titles for Catholic Central. In October of 2013 Bill was inducted into the Detroit Catholic Central High School Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of that first State Championship team. Bill earned a wrestling scholarship to Wayne State University in Detroit, where he lettered for two seasons (1969-70 and 1970-71). Under Coach Bob Hurley he competed in the 1970 NCAA College Division National Championship Tournament held in Ashland, Ohio. Bill then transferred to Eastern Michigan University, coached by Erik Pedersen, where he was chosen captain of the wrestling team for his senior year (1973-4). During his time at Eastern, he was also an honor student and was nominated for Athlete of the Year. The following season Bill served as a Graduate Assistant while pursuing a master's degree. In 1975 following his graduation from Eastern Michigan, over 40 years ago, Bill moved to Pinellas County, Florida, where he embarked on an extraordinary officiating career. In 1979 he relocated to Lakeland, where he and Hall of Famer Brian Bain formed the Lake Region Wrestling Officials Association, with Bill serving as its inaugural president. In 1983 Bill transferred to Port St. Lucie, and refereed wrestling on the Treasure Coast for 3 seasons. In 1986 Bill moved to Palm Beach County and was one of the founders, along with Hall of Famers Ken Veronee and Don Smith, of the Palm Beach Wrestling Officials Association in 1988. He served admirably as the PBWOA's first president, and held that office until 1996. Bill has now completed his 36th year as an FHSAA referee, and has been a highly regarded official throughout the state of Florida, from the Panhandle to the Keys. He has officiated at multiple county championships, and has worked 36 District, 35 Region, and approximately 20 FHSAA State Championship Tournaments. Bill also has had the distinct honor of being a Head Referee at the State Tournament. Bill has been a mentor to both veteran and inexperienced officials, and is known for his ability to defuse intense situations. His calmness and decision-making are respected by all. Many South Florida referees have benefitted from Bill's expertise and training, including those attending FHSAA Wrestling Field Clinics. In 2013 Bill was inducted into the Palm Beach County Wrestling Hall of Fame. He personally feels that he has been extremely blessed to have been associated with this great sport, and he owes the sport so much.....and not vice-versa. Bill is a great representative of both the sport of wrestling, and of wrestling officials. Bill recently retired from a career in health care, and now resides in Port St. Lucie with the love of his life, his wonderful and incredibly supportive wife, Sandi. They both enjoy riding their Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the picturesque mountains of North Carolina, as well as the beautiful beaches of Florida. Bill and Sandi are the proud parents of 5 amazing adult children-Jason, Allison, Brian, Sarah and Dayna; with 14 delightful grandchildren-Madison, Jason, Ella, James, Eben, Angela, Liam, Justin, George, Juliet, Victoria, Brielle, "JD", and Oaklynn.
