John DeWeese

Born in Cleburne, Texas into a military family, DeWeese’s family moved to Fayetteville, NC in 1971 prior to his senior year of high school. DeWeese was a high school football player, but until moving to North Carolina, none of the high schools he attended fielded a wrestling team.  DeWeese attended the University of Tennessee, graduating in 1976 with a degree in Animal Science and Agriculture. Returning to live in Fayetteville, DeWeese would soon settle on education as a career. In 1987, he began teaching science at Lewis Chapel Junior High School in Fayetteville.   In 1989, DeWeese became the coach of the junior high wrestling program at Lewis Chapel, the beginning of a 28-year career coaching wrestling. Despite having never wrestled himself, DeWeese’s Lewis Chapel teams won three consecutive conference championships.  In 1992, Cumberland County’s junior high 9th graders moved up to the high schools and DeWeese transferred to Seventy-First High School. There he joined the wrestling staff and, along with Hall-of-Fame Coach David Culbreth, would coach teams to three state championships. In 2000, DeWeese moved to a newly opened Jack Britt High School where he would serve as the head wrestling coach until his retirement from coaching in 2017.  DeWeese’s Britt teams won 13 conference championships and finished as state runner-up in 2013 and 2014.  In 2015, Jack Britt would capture both the 4A state tournament and dual team championships.  DeWeese has coached 2x and 3x state champions, the only multiple-time state champions from Cumberland County.  He was also involved with NC USA Wrestling, coached freestyle and Greco-Roman, and was a North Carolina National Team assistant for two years.  DeWeese is regarded by his wrestlers as a coach who is in your corner for life and some of his former wrestlers are now coaches. His proudest accomplishment is having three of his former Britt wrestlers attend the US Military Academy at West Point.  DeWeese finished his career with 402 career dual meet victories and is is still teaching science at Jack Britt.
