Leigh Harris

Harris began his still-active, 50-year, wrestling career in 1968 on his father’s wrestling team at Pine Crest High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  At Pine Crest, Harris was team captain and placed 3rd in the state his senior year. After high school, Harris attended Western Carolina University from 1971-75 on a wrestling and work study scholarship. He wrestled for three seasons at Western Carolina before moving into coaching and officiating.  In 1974, Harris became an assistant wrestling coach at Sylva-Webster High School while also officiating matches.  After graduating from Western Carolina, he taught math and coached wrestling at Cross Keys High School in Georgia from 1975-78 before returning to Fort Lauderdale to teach math and coach wrestling, football, and baseball at Pine Crest.  In 1987, Harris and his returned to officiating, joining what is now the Western North Carolina Wrestling Officials Association.  Harris officiated the state tournament on five different occasions and has also called state dual team semi-final and championship matches.  In 1989, Harris accepted a teaching position at Christ School in Arden, North Carolina. He would serve as Christ School’s wrestling coach from 1989-1995.  In 2011, Harris assumed the position of regional supervisor for the WNCWOA.  In 2011, he was also designated as Wrestling Sport Chair for the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association directing both the state tournament and guiding coaches within the Association. Currently, Harris oversees 54 schools as a regional supervisor and manages around 20 officials per season. As of 2018, Harris had taught math for 43 years, coached wrestling for 21 years, and officiated wrestling for 34 years.  Harris received the Distinguished Service Award from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association in 2006.  He’s also been recognized as a teacher of the year and a five-time Brevard Mentor Teacher of the Year. An avid outdoorsman, Harris also served as program director for the Wilderness Program at Camp Highlander and was the Outdoor Program Director at Christ School for 23 years.
