Alphonso Henry

Alphonso Henry comes from a long line of successful wrestlers. This led him to his wrestling career at Stephen Decatur High School which began in 1971 under the supervision of Coach Cord. Alphonso quickly took to the sport and had great success. He became a team captain during his junior and senior years. He was a finalist in the District tournament and regional qualifier for three consecutive years. After graduating from Stephen Decatur in 1975, Alphonso attended RETS Institute in Baltimore. Alphonso currently works for the city of Salisbury Waste Water Facility, where he has been employed for the last seventeen years. For over thirty-seven years Alphonso has continuously had an incredible impact in the sport of wrestling. He served as a volunteer, assistant coach and Head Coach at Stephen Decatur High School for twenty years with his teammate Ron Foreman. He was also assistant coach at Wicomico High School for three years. Coach Henry continues to be involved in the sport of wrestling as he maintains his fourteen-year coaching career at James M. Bennett High School where they have won numerous awards and championships. During his career, Alphonso also assisted as a volunteer coach with the Salisbury State Wrestling Club. During the off season, Alphonso started a summer program working with many high school and college level wrestlers with the assistance of Mardela coach Dion Johnson. In March of 2003 Alphonso developed an interest in pursuing his own Wicomico Athletic Club. This wrestling program focused on freestyle in high school, college and open divisions. After coaching so many others, Alphonso returned to the mat competing in open free style tournaments. He placed at the Salisbury State invitational, free style as a runner up.
