Monty Anderson

Monty Anderson - attended Wray High School graduating in May 1969. He was fortunate to have Bob Smith as his wrestling coach who remains a lifelong mentor and friend. He was a state champion in the 127-Ib weight class in the Class AA tournament and a part of Wray's 1969 State Championship team. He wrestled three years at the University of Northern Colorado and along with Jon Penfold was a student wrestling coach at Valley High School under Ric Rogers. They also remain lifelong friends and he enjoyed coaching in the LPAA League with Jon for many years. Monty started coaching in 1966-1969 during his high school years at Wray for a group of 3rd-6th grade wrestlers in the VFW Elementary Wrestling Program. He was a freestyle coach at Wray in 1970 and 1971, Valley High School student coach 1973-1974, and then coached at Fleming High School 1974-1978, Caliche High School 1978-1993, and Sterling High School 1993-1997. He still serves as the announcer for all Sterling High School home wrestling matches. Monty has enjoyed going to the Colorado State Wrestling Tournament every year from 1966-2016. Over the years Monty was blessed to coach League and District Championship teams, state placers, and champions, but it was the work in the wrestling room that he enjoyed the most. His love of the sport of wrestling was in coaching the young men to reach their full potential both on and off the mat. For Monty and his wife Joyce, wrestling was a family endeavor and she never missed a match or tournament. Monty coached their three sons, Brian, Alan, and Travis who were in the wrestling room from a young age and grew up with an appreciation of the sport and the work ethic it required. All three wrestled in the off season and competed in National Freestyle and Greco Roman tournaments. They wrestled in high school at Sterling and placed in the Colorado State tournament multiple times. After his retirement from coaching in 1997 and teaching in 2002, Monty enjoys spending time with his family, wife Joyce of 43 years, his sons Brian and wife Jessica and their children Hayley 15, Joshua 7, Jacob 5,and Luke 3; Alan and wife Jamie and their children Brooks 5 and Lyla 1; and Travis. He is an avid Denver Bronco and Colorado Rockies fan, enjoys college football, and following all high school sports. In the summer you will find him on the golf course or working in his yard and garden.
