Henry Franklin

Henry Franklin began his wrestling career at the age of five after watching his three older brothers compete while his father, Haswell Franklin Sr., helped promote Maryland Wrestling. He wrestled for Randallstown, Towson, Dumbarton and Gilman Junior League Teams while traveling outside of Maryland with his father to seek national competition. The trips and input from various coaches prepared him to make an immediate impact at Gilman High School. As a four year starter, Henry was a four-time MSA finalist, two-time champion and three-time National Prep placer. His high school success allowed him to continue wrestling at the NCAA Division I level at the University of Pennsylvania. It was during college that Henry heightened his Freestyle and Greco Officiating resume after being introduced to officiating in high school. His dedication to officiating gave him the opportunity to officiate finals matches at the Cadet/Junior Nationals at Fargo as well as the US Open in Las Vegas. Henry brought the experience he gained as a Freestyle/Greco Official on the national level back to Maryland and was the Maryland's Head Freestyle/Greco Official for ten years. After beginning as an assistant coach at Archbishop Curley, Henry moved to Calvert Hall as Head Coach in 1994. Calvert Hall went from winless that first year to a record 14 dual meet wins two years later. As a result, Henry was named the Sun Paper's 1996-97 Baltimore City/County Coach of the Year. In 1998, Calvert Hall became the first team to win the MIAA Tournament in 22 years, dethroning Mt. St. Joseph. Five of his wrestlers won individual state titles. After 7 years at Calvert Hall, Henry returned to Gilman as Head Coach in 2002 and became Assistant Coach in 2011. He is also Treasurer of the Maryland State Wrestling Association, Chairman of the Maryland Independent School Tournament and Maryland representative on the National Prep Board. Last year, the Maryland Wrestling Officials Association presented Henry with their most prestigious award, the William Hastings Contribution to Wrestling.
