Robert Christin

Bob Christin's wrestling career began at Brown University in 1966 since his high school in Indiana had no wrestling program. Although he was recruited for football, Bob began to focus solely on wrestling after two years. He was team captain as a senior and a finalist at the New England Interscholastic Wrestling Tournament. Bob graduated cum laude from Brown and subsequently from DePaul Law School in 1975. He later moved to Maryland where he assumed a position as an attorney for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. After 30 years there, he moved into private practice where he rose to partner in the Van Ness Feldman Law Practice. When Bob's two sons were old enough to wrestle, Bob started the Gaithersburg Sports Association in 1987. The program grew into 4 intramural level squads and a team in the Capital Area Wrestling League. Bob was responsible for organizational, fundraising and administrative duties as well as coaching all 5 teams. In 1998, Bob started the Gaithersburg Sports Association Wrestling League which included the 4 original teams and intramural teams from other wrestling clubs in Montgomery County. Bob continued to coach and manage the GSWAL until 2003 when he turned over the administrative duties to the Maryland Youth Wrestling League. Bob has continued to coach for 29 years. Thanks to Bob's efforts, numerous high school state place winners and prep All- Americans can trace their wrestling roots to the lessons they learned under his direction. They include: Matt Palmer, All-American at Columbia University, Tony Howard, All-American at McDaniel College and 2015 World Champion, and 2016 Olympic Champion and USA team member Helen Maroulis. Several of Bob's former wrestlers have become coaches, including Skylar Saar, head coach at nationally ranked Our Lady of Good Counsel High School. Bob has been an outspoken voice in educating the public and members of congress about the unintended consequences that Title IX has had on college wrestling programs. He has organized several efforts to explain how the Department of Education has used unfair quota systems to implement Title IX. Bob and his wife Barbra have been married years and have three children, Brian, Michael, and Maureen.
