Frank Meyer (Dutch)

November 14, 1924 - September 14, 2008

Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Meyer joined the US Navy in 1943 after graduating from high school. He served as a radio instructor until the end of World War II.  After the war, Meyer went to college and played football, graduating from the University of Nebraska in 1951.  He would later earn a Master’s degree from the University of Colorado and a Ph.D. from West Virginia University.  Meyer would go on to coach football and wrestling at schools in California, New Jersey, and North Carolina before his hiring in 1969 as a Professor of Physical Education at Catawba College in Salisbury.  He founded the wrestling program at Catawba and would serve as the school’s wrestling coach until 1983.  Meyer’s Catawba teams boasted 13 winning seasons in 14 years, produced numerous All-American wrestlers, and placed at least one wrestler at the Nationals for ten consecutive years. He organized the oldest one-day clinic in North Carolina which had a peak attendance of 325 participants.  Meyer was named the NAIA District 26 Coach of the Year in 1983 and inducted into the Catawba Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.  In 2006, Catawba College named its auxiliary gym in his honor.  In addition to coaching, Meyer also was a long-time official and helped to recruit and train wrestling officials in his area.  In recognition of his service to officiating, he was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award given by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.
