David Culbreth

Culbreth is a North Carolina native who attended Seventy-First High School in Fayetteville.  As a high school wrestler, Culbreth finished 4th at the 1986 state tournament and was a state champion at 135 lbs. in 1987.  He wrestled for three years at NC State University under Coach Bob Guzzo and transferred to Pembroke State College where he wrestled his senior season under Coach PJ Smith.  In 1994, Culbreth returned to his alma mater at Seventy-First, serving the Falcons as an assistant wrestling coach for one season and head coach from 1995-2000.  Over the course of five seasons, Culbreth’s teams never lost a conference match, qualified for the playoffs every season, won over 30 individual tournaments, captured five regional tournament titles, and was runner-up in the 2000 state tournament.  Culbreth’s teams won four state championships including tournament titles in 1998 and 1999 and dual meet titles in 1999 and 2000. The 1999 Seventy-First team set or tied five state records including: most team points scored (191), most finalists (9), most individual championships (5), most top-four place-winners (9), and most margin of victory (84.5).  Culbreth was twice honored as the North Carolina Coach of the Year, coached ten individual state champions, two high school all-Americans and led team North Carolina to the Disney dual AAU national championship in 1997.  After leaving Seventy-First in 2000, Culbreth began officiating and also started a middle school program at Gray’s Creek Middle School where he coached until 2009.  As an official, Culbreth has called multiple individual state tournaments, dual team state championships , state playoffs, and regional tournaments. He has also officiated the NCAA Division II regional tournament, Super 32 tournaments, and NCAA Division I, II, and III wrestling matches.  Culbreth served as the North Carolina regional officials supervisor from 2012-2013 and has served for many years as the head official at the state individual tournament.  Culbreth has the distinction of wrestling, coaching (dual and individual), and officiating (dual and individual) in the state finals.
