Jay Lineberry

A native of Burlington and a standout wrestler in both high school and college, Lineberry won over 100 career matches at Southern Alamance High School and was a member of their 1976 state championship team.  He was runner-up in the 1977 state tournament and was the state champion at 115 lbs. in 1978.  In 2011, Lineberry was inducted into the Southern Alamance Hall of Fame. After high school, Lineberry went to UNC-Chapel Hill where he was a member of the 1979 ACC Championship team.  In 1979, he transferred to Elon College where he was All-Conference (first team) three-times, All-District (first team) three-times, a four-time NAIA national qualifier and a two-time NAIA All-American.  In 1982, he was the Carolina Conference Wrestler of the Year.  Lineberry finished his career at Elon with an 89-7-1 record and, after graduating, stayed on as an assistant coach from 1984-86.  Elevated to head coach in 1986, Lineberry served for one year as Elon’s head coach before the program was discontinued in 1987.  He was inducted into the Elon College Hall of Fame in 1995.  In 1987, Lineberry began his high school coaching career at Central Davidson High School where he was head wrestling coach from 1987-2001 and from 2004 to present.  In 1991, his team was the state dual team runner-up.  After 25 seasons (through 2015), he had compiled a record of 235 wins, 121 losses, and one tie, coaching 104 all-conference wrestlers, 64 state qualifiers, 19 state place-winners and six individual state champions.
