Bill Herber

Bill Herber LIFETIME SERVICE TO WRESTLING Bishop Blanchet High School, 1959-2015 Bill Herber started the wrestling program at Bishop Blanchet High School of Seattle in 1959, and has been the head coach for 30 of the past 55 years, assisting during the other years. Coach Herber received his BS degree from University of Notre Dame in 1958; his MS degree from the University of Washington in 1959; and his MA Degree from the University of Illinois in 1964. Herber retired from full time teaching in 2010 after 50 years in the classroom, but in his words: " I plan to continue assisting the Bishop Blanchet wrestling program until I'm 80?, or until I'm in a coffee can, whichever comes first." Bill's modesty has resulted in no accurate dual meet coaching record, but through 1980, his dual meet record was 155 wins, 129 losses and 13 ties coupled with one state champion, and ten state place winners and as of 2015 a total of 22 Bishop Blanchet wrestlers have placed at state. Coach Herber's highest compliment comes from his former wrestlers who praise his coaching philosophy and its lifetime values. They all consider him more than a coach; he is also a close and personal friend. Herber's influence is exemplified by the large number of former Bishop Blanchet wrestlers who have coached wrestling in Washington, including Washington State Wrestling Hall of Fame coaches Barry Knott and Tom Sewell. Additionally, during the 1960's, Bill served as a wrestling official for the Pacific Northwest Wrestling Officials Association. Coach Herber has been recognized many times for his accomplishments in wrestling; Metro League Wrestling Coach of the Year numerous times, the most recent in 2006; The Darrel Whitmore "AAA" Wrestling Coach of the Year in 1980; Washington State Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 1986; Seattle Post Intelligencer Wrestling Coach of the Year in 2006. Bill states: "Of course the best honor is to be able to work with the kids and to be able to share a small slice of their lives during a very important and challenging time in their lives." Herber continues to live in Seattle and has 7 adult children: Kara (51); Kevin (50); Joseph (49); Sharmon (48); Daniel (47); Julie (45); Laurie (40). Bill has two Grandchildren.
