Karl Spinnenweber

Karl Spinnenweber, a high-ranking executive and outstanding wrestling coach, is from Pasadena, Maryland.

He wrestled on championship high school teams under his mentor, Ed Gilson, who received the Lifetime Service to Wrestling award from the West Virginia State Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2007.

At the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Karl was two-time captain and an outstanding wrestler for the Sea Eagles while graduating with a bachelor's degree in marine engineering. He obtained an master's degree in Fluid Mechanics and Thermal Sciences from the George Washington University, followed by an MBA from Duke University.

Karl has applied this wide-ranging knowledge and the discipline of over 40 years as a wrestler and as a coach to rise to a high level as a senior business executive.

Beginning in 1984 as a marine engineer, he has held ever-more-demanding positions in various engineering firms, among them: program manager for Advanced Marine Enterprises; department manager for Nichols, Inc.; and a 13-year tenure at Computer Sciences Corporation, where he advanced to vice president and general manager of the Army Division Defense Group.

Currently, he is executive vice president and general manager of AECOM/URS, a Fortune 500 engineering and construction company with $1 billion of annual revenue and 7,600 employees.

Despite this stellar career in the worlds of business and national defense, he points to his coaching as perhaps his "greatest contribution."

After four years as an assistant wrestling coach at Oakton High School, he took on the head coaching position in 1989 at Herndon High School, where with Steve Sabo, a Lifetime Service to Wrestling recipient from the Virginia Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1990, he built a superlative program. Karl's teams won 10 district and four regional championships, producing 51 district, 25 regional, and seven state champions in 14 years.

Karl says he will always be grateful for the chance to have a "positive influence" on the lives of many wrestlers, and for the friendship of coaches and contributors to wrestling.

"Coach Spin" was inducted as a charter member of the Herndon High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014.

He is the son of Harry and Gerry Spinnenweber and brother to Bob and John.

Karl has been married to Lisa for 25 years. They have three lovely daughters: Julia, Emma, and Bailey.
