Wavie Gibson III

Wavie Gibson III fell in love with wrestling when he became a wrestling manager in the 7th and 8th grades at Mardela High School on the Eastern Shore. In high school, Wavie made the varsity baseball and wrestling teams, and graduated in 1982, when he went undefeated and became Mardela's first wrestling state champion under coach David Decker. He went to college on a full academic scholarship and in his senior year (1986) at the UM Eastern Shore, Wavie placed third in the MEAC, became an Eastern Regional qualifier and was selected as the team's most outstanding wrestler. When he moved to Baltimore, he became an educator like his parents. He quickly sought out Walbrook Sr. High's wrestling team and started practicing with them, becoming an assistant coach in 1987. The team was undefeated that year and won an MSA conference title. Wavie became head coach in 1989. In the 1992-1993 season, his team led Baltimore City into the MPSSAA where they had nine regional qualifiers (finished 3rd in the 3A/4A East) and six state qualifiers in their tournament debuts. Wavie coached some of the first state placers from Baltimore City. Coach Gibson transferred to Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1999 where his success continued. His Poly teams were ever present in the top rankings of Baltimore City Public Schools and they became the first Baltimore City team to become a number one seed and host a regional dual meet tournament. Wavie's Seniors from 1999 to 2014 had an amazing college acceptance rate of 89%. While coaching at Poly, Wavie was also an assistant coach (1999-2006) of the Woodlawn Wolfpack (MJWL), where he had the pleasure of coaching his son, Wavie Gibson IV. While maintaining a busy coaching schedule, Wavie found time to serve the wrestling community as a MPSSAA state wrestling committee member and Baltimore City District IX wrestling representative since 1993. He is currently a voting member of the Maryland Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and has hosted numerous tournaments, city wide practices, organizational meetings and other events that support wrestling.
