Ronnie A. Sigmon, born in Newton, North Carolina, joined the Newton-Conover High School wrestling team his junior year with the goal of improving in football. Sigmon found success on the mat and became Newton-Conover's first sectional and regional champion at 155 lbs. After high school, he was an assistant coach at Newton-Conover High in 1977. Sigmon then went into officiating and worked from 1976 to 1981 under booking agent Steve Gabriel. Sigmon returned to wrestling as a coach at Bandys High School in 1995, reviving a program that had been discontinued for 14 years. While at Bandys, Sigmon coached the Trojans until 2006, guiding the wrestlers to 2004, 2005 and 2006 state tournament championships along with state dual team championships in 2005 and 2006. Sigmon was named the National Wrestling Coaches Association Coach of the Year for North Carolina in 2006; Conference Coach-of-the-Year several times, the Charlotte Observer Wrestling Coach-of-the-Year in 2005 and 2006, and the North Carolina MAT NEWS 2A Coach of the Year in 2004, 2005, and 2006. He was also the North Carolina USA Wrestling Head National Freestyle/Greco Team Coach from 2004-2009 and the East Coast Duals coach for NCUSA from 2005-07. In total, Sigmon coached 62 state qualifiers and 40 state placers to a total of 16 state championships and 19 All-American designations. Two of his wrestlers, Byron Sigmon and Sean McIntosh were North Carolina Wrestlers of the Year and recipients of the Dave Shultz Excellence Award. After leaving Bandys, Sigmon returned to officiating, where he's served from 2007 to present. As an official, he has worked multiple NCHSAA Individual, NCHSAA Dual Team, National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA), and Super 32 Tournaments. At the collegiate level, Sigmon has also officiated in multiple NCAA events. Sigmon and his wife, Deborah, reside in Claremont and are the parents of three sons: Shawn, Jason, and Byron.
