Michael J. Whisner has dedicated over two decades to shaping young minds and athletes at Sparrows Point High School, where he has served as a social studies teacher for 24 years. His impact extends far beyond the classroom, having coached a wide range of sports including football, cross country, girls and boys lacrosse, outdoor track and field, and most notably, wrestling.
Coach Whisner’s wrestling career is marked by extraordinary achievement and unwavering commitment. Over the years, he has amassed an impressive 446 career wins, guiding his teams to six county championships and seven regional dual meet titles. Under his leadership, Sparrows Point reached the dual meet state finals four times, a testament to his strategic acumen and ability to inspire excellence.
His influence on individual athletes is equally remarkable. Coach Whisner has mentored seven individual state champions, 33 regional champions, and 31 county champions, helping them reach their full potential both on and off the mat. His coaching philosophy emphasizes discipline, resilience, and sportsmanship—values that have left a lasting legacy in the lives of countless student-athletes.
Beyond the accolades, Coach Whisner is known for his humility, dedication, and deep-rooted passion for education and athletics. His ability to connect with students and athletes alike has made him a beloved figure in the Sparrows Point community.
As he is inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, Coach Whisner’s
