Harry Barnabae has been dedicated to wrestling for more than 30 years beginning with 3 years of officiating to a lifelong passion of coaching countless wrestlers across
Maryland and beyond. In 1999, Harry founded the Rebels Junior League Wrestling Program with his assistant, Doug Lombard, beginning at Archbishop Spalding High and later moving to Mount Saint Joseph High School as the MSJ Titans producing 16 individual Junior League state champions facing high-level competition around the country.
Harry also coached the Maryland Schoolboys National Team, the state’s Freestyle and Greco Cadet teams and 13 MSJ wrestlers to the Fargo national tournament. Since 2011, Harry has served as Head Wrestling Coach at Mount Saint Joseph High School, where he and his assistants, Chris Combs, Shane Lowman and Rick Couch, built a perennial powerhouse, earning 6 consecutive Maryland Independent State Team Championships and 7 War on the Shore titles.
In 2019 the Team set a MD record with all 14 Wrestlers placing 3rd or higher in the Conference and State Championships amassing 375 season falls in route to a U.S. National ranking. Harry has been honored as Coach of the Year multiple times, including recognition from Varsity Sports Network and The Baltimore Sun.
He’s coached 35 MD Independent State Champions, 43 MIAA Conference Champions, National Prep champions, and Nationally ranked wrestlers, including his son, Chris, with whom he proudly shared the Baltimore Sun’s 2019 Father-Son Coach and Wrestler of the Year honors.
Harry’s greatest pride lies not only in the wins and titles but in his opportunity to have coached all of his sons including AJ, Alex, and Nicolas and the lifelong lessons of discipline, perseverance, and family that wrestling instills. His legacy is carried by the hundreds of young men he has coached, mentored, and inspired both on and off the mat.
