Sam Davis

Sam Davis is a man whose name is synonymous with excellence, leadership, and dedication in the world of wrestling. Sam’s journey in wrestling began in the 1960s when he first stepped onto the mat. As an athlete, he was a standout competitor, serving as captain of Lansing Eastern High School’s state championship team in 1968 and winning the MHSAA State Individual Championship in 1969. But his contributions to wrestling didn’t stop there, they only grew stronger.

For over 43 years, Sam has been a registered wrestling official, officiating at all levels, including 36 state finals and two JUCO National Championships. His officiating excellence has set the benchmark for success, earning him the respect and admiration of athletes, coaches, and fellow officials alike. He has been selected as a finals official for 34 years and has served as the Official in Charge at both individual and team finals for the MHSAA for the past six years. His work ethic, character, and genuine care for young people have made him a model for officials across all sports.

Sam’s leadership extends beyond the mat. As president of the Lansing Wrestling Officials Association for over 30 years, he has mentored countless officials, guiding them with humility, thoughtfulness, and respect. He doesn’t just provide answers—he teaches problem-solving, helping others grow and develop their own skills. His ability to connect with people, build trusting relationships, and inspire growth is a rare and invaluable gift.

But perhaps what sets Sam apart most is his unwavering commitment to mentoring young people. Whether through his volunteer work, his role as an educator and athletic director, or his involvement in the wrestling community, Sam has dedicated his life to helping others succeed. His passion for mentoring was evident in his acceptance speech when he was inducted into the Greater Lansing Sports Hall of Fame in 2011, where he emphasized the importance of community leaders and sports icons serving as mentors to the next generation.

Sam’s accolades are numerous: Vern Norris Award winner, Lansing State Journal Wrestling Official of the Year, inductee into the Lansing Eastern Hall of Fame, and now, a nominee for the Michigan Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. But beyond the awards and titles, Sam’s legacy lies in the lives he has touched, the lessons he has imparted, and the positive impact he has made on the wrestling community.

Today, we honor a man whose story is woven into the fabric of Michigan wrestling—a man whose tireless dedication, leadership, and passion have left an indelible mark. Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in celebrating the extraordinary career and contributions of Sam Davis as he is inducted into the Michigan Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
