Paul Oberst has been a lifelong servant to the sport of wrestling.

“OB” was captain of his Cleveland Rhodes High School wrestling team and would go on to wrestle at Bowling Green where he would help the team win a Mid-American Conference championship in 1966.

Upon his graduation, Oberst continued to impact the wrestling community by creating the wrestling program at Upper Sandusky in 1969. After a few years at Upper Sandusky, Oberst would move to Brooklyn High School where he coached eight state qualifiers and helped coach the Ohio Cultural Exchange Team that traveled to Iran in 1975 and Mexico in 1977.

In 1980, Oberst would head to North Royalton High School where he would stay until 2003. While at North Royalton, he would lead his team to four Top 10 team finishes in the state tournament, coach 40 state qualifiers, and 27 state place-winners. Of the 27, two would go on to win the state championship. Additionally, five would go on to coach wrestling at the collegiate or high school level.

While Oberst was inducted into the Ohio Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 1999, he continued to coach until 2011.

In addition to his illustrious coaching career, Oberst served as a wrestling official and an instructor for both coaches, athletes, and students across the state.

For 16 years, Oberst was an instructor at Baldwin Wallace where he taught education classes and supervised over 100 student-​teachers.

He also organized and presented clinics for wrestling officials, served as a wrestling proctor for the Rochester Institute of Technology, and was the chair of the business education department at North Royalton for 13 years.

Oberst has made countless contributions to the state of Ohio and the sport of wrestling as a coach, instructor, mentor, and most importantly, a role model. He has always uplifted the lives of each person around him, treating them with the utmost respect.
