Steve Engelland

Steven Engelland graduated from Washington High School in Two Rivers, Wisconsin in 1978. While in high school Steve competed in football, wrestling, baseball and track & field. In football, he was an all-conference selection and team MVP. In wrestling, he was a conference champ and a 2x state qualifier, finishing his senior year 28-1.

After high school, Steve attended UW-Whitewater where he competed in football and wrestling. His freshman year he was a conference place winner and a NCAA qualifier at 177lbs. After his freshman year he transferred to UW-Oshkosh where he continued to compete in football and wrestling. In 1982 he was an all-conference selection at linebacker and captain of the UW-Oshkosh football team. Wrestling at UW-Oshkosh under Terry Barth, he was a 3x WIAC placewinner, 2x NCAA qualifier and captain of the 1983 wrestling team.

Steve’s first teaching job was in Marion, Wisconsin where he was head wrestling coach and a Physical Education teacher. A year later, he moved to Campbellsport, Wisconsin. From 1984-1989 he was a teacher and assistant wrestling coach under Hall of Fame coach Jerry Marking. Jerry became a true mentor and friend to Steve, and the eventual godfather to his son Sam. In his five years at Campbellsport, the team never lost a conference dual meet.

In 1989, Steve took a teaching and coaching position at Neenah High School where he coached football and was the assistant wrestling coach under National Hall of Fame member Dave McCarthy. From 1993 to 2000 Steve became the head wrestling coach at Oshkosh North High School, while teaching in Neenah. In 2000, Steve returned to his friend and mentor Dave McCarthy’s coaching staff at Neenah. From 2000-2011 Steve was an assistant high school coach and middle school coach for the Neenah School District.

When Steve’s son Ben became the head coach at Kimberly High School, he was honored when Ben asked for his help. From 2013-2015 Steve coached the Kimberly Youth program and from 2015 to present he has been the Kimberly Middle School Coach.

During Steve’s coaching career he has been involved in the coaching of:

● 70 - State Qualifiers

● 6 - State Champions

● 1 - State Team Appearance

● 1995 - FVA Coach of the Year

● 1998 - Neenah School District Teacher of the Year Award

● 1999 - Neenah Police Dept Leadership Award

● 2001 - Assistant Coach to the Wisconsin School Boy National Dual Team

● 2005 - Wisconsin District 10 Assistant Football Coach of the Year

● 2008 - Wisconsin Wrestling Coaches Association Developmental Coach Award

Steve and his wife Donna have three children and five grandchildren. His oldest son Ben and his wife Beth Ann have a daughter, Emery and a son Easton. Ben is an English teacher and head wrestling coach at Kimberly High School. His son, Sam and wife Tess have three children, two sons: Canaan and Birke, and daughter Clarke. Sam is the Director of Activities for the Hortonville School District. Their daughter Rylee is an elementary school teacher for the Neenah School District. Steve would like to thank his wife Donna whose love and support has enabled him to stay involved in the great sport of wrestling all these years and to continue to do what he loves. Wrestling has been an important part of the Engelland Family.
