Randy Tomaras was born into wrestling as the youngest son of Dolly and Dr. William “Bill” Tomaras, the Father of Washington Wrestling and Hall of Fame coach. (WNWHOF-2003).  With Randy’s induction, he and his father will become Washingtons first Father-Son State Chapter inductees.  Randy wrestled at Sehome High School and started his collegiate wrestling at Cal Poly in California in 1968.  Tomaras transferred to Western Washington University wrestling 2 years for the Vikings, qualifying for the NAIA Nationals twice. 

Graduating in 1972, Randy began a 50-plus year career of involvement in all aspects of the Sport of Wrestling.  He was an assistant wrestling coach at 6 different high schools and officiated wrestling for six years.  Tomaras’ biggest contributions have been off the mat in the promotion of the sport.  Randy put his publication and photography skills to good use and in 1974 started Washington State’s first Wrestling Newspaper, the Washington Whizzer.  He was active in the creation of the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association and the re-establishment of the Wrestling Cultural Exchange Program in the state.

In 1981, Tomaras began working on the National and International levels of wrestling.  He started working for the National Governing Body for wrestling and served as the Public Relations, Publications, and Cultural Exchange Director for three years.  During this time a record number of US teams traveled abroad, and foreign teams toured the United States for the wrestling cultural exchange experience.  Randy was instrumental in involving China and the Soviet Union in the Cultural Exchange program.  Randy has also provided numerous photographs and articles for the Wrestling USA Magazine since 1971.

Randy Tomaras has been honored as the National Assistant Coach of the Year by Wrestling USA in 1981.  In the fall of 2023, he was presented the Tomaras Award, named after his father, by the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association.

Most recently, two projects have been Randy’s focus.   In 2021, he began work with the 2024 Paris Olympics to create a Paris Guidebook for visitors to the Olympic Games.  Secondly, Randy and others interested in bringing back college wrestling to Washington State, started working with the state legislature and introduced a bill that would help fund the restoration of college wrestling.  The bill successfully passed in the spring of 2023, providing funds state colleges can use to help bring back men’s and women’s collegiate wrestling in Washington.  Randy currently resides in Sequim, Washington.
