Vidal Mejia

Vidal Mejia was born and raised in Mesa, Arizona and graduated from Westwood High School.

Vidal began his coaching career at Kino Junior High School in 1983. He then coached at Fee’s Middle School in Tempe, Arizona from 1989-1995.

He graduated from Arizona State University in 1996 and was hired by Queen Creek High School as a CTE Teacher and wrestling coach. In two years at Queen Creek his teams won two regional titles, had 11 state place-winners, and finished in the Top 10 in the state twice.

Vidal was hired at Chandler High School in 1998 as an assistant coach working with Hall of Fame coaches Dr. Dennis Gurecki, John Carlson and Sisto Rosales. At Chandler his teams have won three section championships and finished in the top five in the state eight times, including a runner-up finish and a state championships in 2012. Since taking over in 2001 Chandler has won over 400 dual meets and he has coached 80 state medalists, including 15 state champions.

On the national level his wrestlers have won 25 USAW/UWW All-American awards, including sux individual national champions.

Since 2000, Vidal has served on the Arizona USA Wrestling Board of Directors, helping to run youth tournaments in Arizona. Vidal was the wrestling commissioner for the Grand Canyon State Games from 2004 through 2018 and was named the Commissioner of the Year in 2008.

In 2009 Vidal was selected as the Arizona Teacher of the Year by Chicanos Pol La Causa and in 2014 he was selected as the Arizona Educator or the Year by the Si Se Puede Foundation.

Vidal earned his bachelor's degree from Arizona State and his master's degree from Northern Arizona University.
