Allen Smith

June 26, 1953 - Present

Allen Smith grew up in the Baltimore Highlands area and started wrestling in 1968 at Landsdowne HS and had a standout career.  Coach Bill Coutros motivated him to attend college, beginning with Catonsville CC where he won a MD JUCO title in 1973.  Then transferring to Towson State College as a junior and senior, 41-8 record.

After graduation, “Smitty” became assistant coach at Mount Saint Joseph High School in 1977 with Neil Adleberg, then head coach in 1979.  During 8 years at the Mount, his dual record was 75-7-4 and won 3 National Prep Tournament Championships- 1980,1983,1984 as well as 6 Maryland Scholastic Association Championships - 1979-1984.  Coach Smith’s high energy and analytics during matches conveyed intangibles to young wrestlers.  Among his wrestlers are 4 First Team High School All Americans, 7 National Prep Champions and 27 MSA Wrestling Champions.

Another notable legacy from his MSJ days is mentoring many of his wrestlers back into coaching from junior league to college level.  Smitty demonstrated dedication, hard work and always going for the fall. “Stalling is for the tired and overmatched” he’s often remembered as saying.

Since 1985, Coach Smith spreads his enthusiasm, fun and dedication for the sport of wrestling at every level: Delone Catholic HS, Mt. Hebron HS, Rebels, Archbishop Curley HS, Johns Hopkins University, Perry Hall HS, Titans Jr. League and most recently back at MSJ as JV Head Coach.  His over 30 year coaching career goal hasn't changed…teaching more than just wrestling!
