Yank Strube

Since the age of 19, Yank Strube has dedicated himself to helping others through the sport of wrestling. Perhaps more than another other individual, he has built up the sport in Frederick County.

Yank founded the Frederick County Mat Club in 1980. He continues to coach that organization. Hundreds of wrestlers have participated since, and every county high school program has benefited from the athletes that the Frederick County Mat Club program has sent their way.

A Tri-state, CVAL, District 1 and Regional champion wrestler at Frederick High School during his tenure as a student, Strube then returned to coach at Frederick High School  for 7 years and led the Cadets to a Maryland dual meet championship, the first ever for a Frederick County school.

Early in his coaching career, he started churning out numerous state high school individual champions, a multitude of state finalists. His success has continued up to the present day as he is now coaching with his son, Chad Strube, the head coach at Middletown High School. They had six wrestlers make it to the semifinals in the most recent high school state tournament. Yank has be at Middletown for 18 years and an official since 1979.

Yank has been the driving force behind Frederick County wrestling since anyone can remember. The number of successful wrestlers that he has influenced is honestly too many to count or list.

He has been true to his wrestling beliefs for 42 years. He has never come out of the trenches. He is a true coach in every sense of the word. He has never moved up in the ranks because he knows where he makes the greatest impact – on the mat.
