Peter Bernardino

Peter Bernardino began his coaching career at Upper Darby High School in 1942. His tenure continued from 1942-1964. During this time, he compiled a record of 184-25-1. He continued his involvement in wrestling by officiating the sport from 1947 to 1958. Bernardino, during his career at Upper Darby High School, won 13 Suburban Championships, 8 AA District Championships, 53 District Champions, 16 Regional Champions, 6 State Finalists and coached Dr. Edward Dawkins, a World Master' Champion in 1994 and 1995. Bernardino coached 11 undefeated teams, five of which were in consecutive years. Bernardino graduated from Upper Darby High School in 1936 and wrestled from 1933-1936 and went undefeated. He was District Champion in 1936. A graduate of Temple University, he wrestled there from 1937-1941. He was undefeated in four years of dual meet competition. He earned a BS from Temple in 1941 and a Masters in Education in 1946. Bernardino has been honored by: Outstanding Alumnus Award by Upper Darby Booster Association, 1977; Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame, 1977; Temple University Hall of Fame, 1979; Upper Darby High School Hall of Fame, 1981; Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, 1984; and the Delaware County Athletic Hall of Fame, 1993. He is also the recipient of the Educator of the Year in 1956and 1959. Bernardino is a member of the Upper Darby Adult School Board of Directors, and was a member of the Upper Darby Forum Board from 1952-1962, and Chairperson for Scholarship Awards form 1953-1970.Bernardino and his wife, Madelyn, are the parents of four children and today divide their time between living at their home in Upper Darby and spending the winters in Florida. More important than his outstanding coaching career was the counseling, teaching, and example set by Peter Bernardino during his 41 years or working with young people. For these reasons and more, Peter Bernardino is honored by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a "Lifetime Service to Wrestling" award recipient.
