Coach G. P. West

G. P. West is a member of the inaugural Tennessee induction class in 1995. G. P. is the godfather of Middle TN wrestling. He was not the most experienced nor most knowledgeable starting out in his wrestling career, but he was the most curious and the most passionate. He took his wrestlers and his simple philosophy and spread wrestling like Johnny Appleseed by conducting free clinics and introducing the sport to kids and new coaches who would also fall in love with the sport. G. P. provided opportunities for wrestlers both far and near to compete by establishing the Tennessee Pride Tournament-an elite event that attracted wrestlers from all over the Southeast in the 70s and 80s as well as establishing the Hillwood High School tournament that followed him to Whites Creek and Brentwood. The list of wrestlers, coaches and officials that can attribute some of their success and passion with the sport is too long to mention, but it does include NWHOF Outstanding American Chief Chadwick Smith (Maplewood HS) and most of the TN State Chapter members. G. P. is an active member of the State Chapter Board of Directors and still providing guidance for over 60 years in the sport.
