Dr. Sam Crosby
Sam Crosby wrestled at Somerville High School where he won four district championships and placed four times in the state tournament, including winning the state championship in 1954.
He also played quarterback on the football team and was named First-Team All-State quarterback.
A two-sport athlete at Rutgers University, Sam lettered in both football and wrestling from 1956-1958. He was the Scarlet Knights’ starting quarterback in their single-wing formation during his senior season in 1958, blocking for First-Team All-America tailback Bill Austin. RU finished with an impressive 8-1 record and a No. 20 ranking in the final Associated Press poll that season, as Sam earned the team’s George T. Cronin Trophy – awarded each season to a varsity football player who manifested the most improvement and progress on the field.
A standout collegiate wrestler, Sam lettered three times on the mat and served as a team captain for Rutgers from 1957-59. As the No. 2 seed at the 1958 EIWA Championships, he won the individual conference title at 167 pounds and qualified for the NCAA Championships.
Following graduation, Sam gave back to the sport of wrestling serving as a scholastic official for 40 years. He has served as chief official at the state tournament and as the New Jersey Wrestling Rules Interpreter for 22 years. Sam officiated at all levels of the state tournament series.
He served eight years on the National Federation Wrestling Committee, most recently as chairman.
During his career as a wrestling official, he also served as president of the New Jersey Officials Association.
He was recognized by Somerville High School with induction as a Charter Member of their Hall of Fame.
Sam received his Doctorate from Rutgers University.
Professionally, Sam was a Principal at the Middle School and High School Principal as well as Assistant Superintendent of Bridgewater-Raritan High School.
