William Smith (Smitty)
William Smith has coached for over forty years in both Howard and Carroll Counties. Besides wrestling, he has coached football, boys and girls lacrosse, boys basketball, boys soccer and field hockey. Thousands of high school students have benefitted from his efforts. Bill’s typical day during wrestling season included a full teaching load at Hammond High School, the high school wrestling practice and then the evening practice at the junior league. Besides instructing youngsters in the Headhunters Wrestling Club, he was one of the co-founders in 1990. Alumni in that club include three time NCAA Champion and Olympic Gold and Silver Medalist, Kyle Snyder. Mike Smith, Kevin Buddock, Daniel Planta, Austin and Jason Kraisser, Jordan Prior and Joey Thomas all wrestled Division One in college and started at the Headhunters Club.
Bill’s coaching stint at Hammond High School includes a varsity record of 116 and 32. The team was Howard County Dual Meet Champions six times and County Tournament Champions five times. Bill was the Howard County Coach of the Year four times. He was also awarded All Metro Coach of the Year by the Washington Post in 1998. James Burrell, Chris Dennis and Vaymond Dennis were all State Champions for Hammond High School. Bill continues to be involved with Hammond Wrestling as the Head JV Coach. He was inducted into the Hammond High School Hall of Fame for wrestling in 1999. Ten years later, he was inducted into the Hammond Hall of Fame for his work as a football coach.
It should be noted that besides his work at the Headhunters Wrestling Club, Bill also coached the Warhawk Junior Program in Carroll County. Bill’s knowledge of wrestling has enabled him to serve as a clinician at numerous summer camps and clinics over the years. Bill is known as an excellent technician of wrestling and a great motivator. He has also served as a father figure to many young men. Bill lives in Mount Airy with his wife Terry. He has five children; Lindsay, Bethany, Chelsea, Briannah and C.J. Smith.
