“Wrestling gave me a scholarship to college, and has made the life I have possible. I owe everything I have and the achievement of my life goals to the sport of wrestling.” 

Donohew was the 1966 West Virginia state champion at 165 pounds and the very first wrestling state champion from Stonewall Jackson High School in Charleston. He attended Fairmont State College on a wrestling scholarship, winning two West Virginia state college titles while lettering four years and compiling a 45-6 career record. 

After graduation, Donohew coached at St. Marys High School from 1971 to 1973 and his team won the Little Kanawha Conference championship. He moved to Wheeling to teach and coach at Warwood High School, working as the assistant varsity wrestling coach from 1973 to 1976. His Viking matmen won team championships at the prestigious Ohio Valley Athletic Conference wrestling tournament and a West Virginia state tournament title.

 In 1976, Warwood High School, Triadelphia High School and Wheeling High School combined to form Wheeling Park High School. Donohew became head wrestling coach at Warwood Junior High School, leading his teams to two Pac-8 championships from 1976 to 2002 while being named Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Junior High Wrestling Coach of the Year.

After retiring as a teacher in 2002, Donohew became head wrestling coach at Follansbee Middle School and led his Blue Wave wrestlers to three BMAC championships.

Coach Donohew has coached wrestling for an incredible 45 years and it was his passion in life. His guidance and life lessons while serving as a role model and striving to make every wrestler a ‘winner’ on the mat in life was demonstrated every day.

Bill and his wife of 55 years, Jeanette, reside in Warwood and have two children, Kelli and Scott, and three grandchildren, Chelsea, Brett and Bethany.
