Bill Zimmerman

William Zimmerman began his love with wrestling in 1959 at Mt. Lebanon High School, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.

In 1963 Bill placed second in Pennsylvania's very tough WPIAL Regional Tournament. Bill went on to wrestle at West Virginia University where he won The Southern Conference Championship in 1966. Bill had a career record of 68 wins and17 losses.

His wrestling career switched from participant to coach in 1967 when he moved to Harford County, Maryland to take a teaching position at Edgewood Junior High School. Bill wanted to help coach at Edgewood High School but they did not have a program at that time. To develop an interest in wrestling, Bill worked with junior high school students during an activity program during school, and worked with high school students in an after-school program.

In 1968, Bob Andreoli, one of the after-school wrestlers, won the Harford County Championship without wrestling a dual meet. In 1971 Bill started the Edgewood High School wrestling team and coached until 1986. During that time, he had two state champions and numerous state place-winners and his teams amassed 144 wins. Bill was named Harford County Coach of the Year in 1984.

While coaching at Edgewood, Bill started and coached the Edgewood Recreation wrestling program. Bill was also the chairperson and coached in the Bel Air Recreational wrestling program for many years.

In 1984 Bill became a member of the Maryland Wrestling Officials Association, an organization with which he is still currently involved. In 33 years Bill has officiated the Maryland Public and Private School State tournaments, and the MPSSAA State Duels.

Several of Coach Zimmerman's Edgewood High School wrestlers have become MWOA wrestling officials. Many of Bill's former wrestlers have gone on to coach at various levels. In 2013 Bill received the very prestigious MPSSAA Service to Wrestling Award.

Bill has been married to his wife Jocklyn for the past 49 years, and have three children, Bethany, Justin and Ryan.

Bill retired in 2007 after 40 years as a teacher and work based learning coordinator for Harford County Public Schools.
