Roy Smith

A two time Idaho State Champion with a full ride scholarship to a Pac-10 school is how Roy Smith began his wrestling tenure. He was the Head Wrestling Coach at Shelley HS from 1969 to 1971 and later the Principal at Ririe High School for 19 years where he was instrumental as an Idaho High School Activities Association Board Member. His influence helped expand the the state tournament to 16 man brackets, match limitations from 30 matches to 16 dates, working with the State tournament organization to set up and run state tournaments for 40 years. With his outstanding reputation and earned trust throughout the State he helped expand the sport of wrestling to all high school classifications in Idaho and raised the bar of excellence by which all are measured. Roy's presence on the Idaho State Seeding committee for over 30 years has been masterful, an original member of the State Sportsmanship Committee for 6 years. IHSAA Distinguished Service Award in 2004 and inducted into the IHSAA Hall of Fame in 2005, awarded the 6th District coaches Distinguished Service Award in 2003 and the Presidential Award from the State Coaches Association in 2013. Roy is a very giving person, of highest integrity who has helped countless young people attain the goals they set for themselves. Even though at the time they didn't think so. For over 48 years Roy is a pillar of honor, discipline and love for kids at the heart.
