Michael Buggey

Mike Buggey was the highly successful head wrestling coach at South Plainfield High School from 1985 thru 1994. Prior to Mike's arrival at South Plainfield, he served as the head coach at Bishop Ahr and Woodbridge High Schools where his training and leadership skills paved the way for his success in wrestling. During that coaching span his teams amassed a career record of 159 wins, several Greater Middlesex Conference Championships, nine District 12 Championships, notwithstanding 76 individual championship titles accumulated by a host of his wrestlers. Mike who has always presented himself in a most professional manner both on and off the mat, assembled a talented coaching staff which supported his efforts to help maintain a standard of wrestling excellence not only at the high school level, but in the community of South Plainfield. The beneficiary of a well developed "feeder" program, Mike and his coaches were able to refine the skills of his wrestlers to levels and accomplishments which were well recognized in Middlesex, Union, and New Jersey circles. A trademark of a South Plainfield wrestler was one for being well conditioned, extremely competitive, and always rising to the level of the competition. After a successful coaching career, Mike entered into a new arena of responsibility by being appointed Director of Athletics at SPHS in 1994, and it was during those ensuing years that he dedicated his time, treasure, and talents towards making athletics at the school a priority which mirrored the best in what could be provided for the student/athlete. Mike plied his leadership skills as a Greater Middlesex Conference officer, director of the District 12 Wrestling Tournament, service to the NJ State Directors of Athletics Association, as well as a commitment to the Piscataway Special Olympics. Mike has also garnered a number of honors while in the profession, and they are: several Wrestling Coach of the Year awards at the conference, district and state levels, Region 3 Hall of Fame induction in 1996, GMC Athletic Director of the Year, and a host of recognitions sponsored by The News Tribune, Courier News, and Home News publications. Mike has always appreciated the support from his wife Gloria, and son Jonathan, and we congratulate Mike as well as his family for his achievements, and induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, New Jersey Chapter for Lifetime Service to Wrestling.
