Roger Wilson

Issaquah High School 1961-1984, 1987-1989, 1994-2000 Shelton High School 2001-2010 Oakland Bay Junior High School 2010 Roger Wilson was a three sport athlete at Central Washington State College, graduating in 1961. Wilson was hired as a Fifth Grade teacher in the Issaquah School District and started the wrestling program at Issaquah High School in 1961. As one of the pioneer wrestling coaches in the state, Coach Wilson was one of the innovators in wrestling. He hosted the first Kid's wrestling program that included 475 kids ages 5-12, and was one of the first schools to use an overhead "Mat Light" for his home dual matches. Additionally he started a company that repaired and resurfaced wrestling mats in the summers for schools in Washington, Idaho and Oregon. Wilson coached a total of 43 wrestling seasons with tremendous success. His teams won their first of 23 KingCo league/Sub Regional titles in 1964. Roger also coached two Regional Tournament Team Champions; placed 3rd in the 1978 Washington State Championships; and had two other 4th place team finishes. His teams placed in the top ten at State twelve times. Between 1976 and 1983 his teams won 89 consecutive dual matches. Wilson coached 6 individual state champions and thirteen runner-ups. In his 25 seasons as head wrestling coach at Issaquah High School, his dual match record was 267-53. Wrestling was not the only sport Wilson coached at Issaquah High School. Roger was the Head Boys Track Coach from 1968-1973; Head Boys/Girls Track Coach 1977-1979; Assistant Girls/Boys Track Coach 1974-1976; Assistant Football Coach 1964-1972; he started the Issaquah High School Powerlifting Program in 1981 that won 5 consecutive State Powerlifting Championships 1983-1987. Overall Wilson coached 10 high school All-Americans, two in wrestling, three in powerlifting, and 5 in girls track. Roger Wilson has received numerous awards for his years of service to athletics: In 1971, Washington State Track Coach of the Year; In 1976 he was the Central Washington University Alumnus of the Year; 1986 Inducted into the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame; 1990 KingCo League Athletic Director of the Year; selected in 1994 to Who's Who in the West. In 2008 he was the Washington State Region 3 Assistant Wrestling Coach of the Year. Coach Wilson also authored two articles in Scholastic Coach Magazine. Roger Wilson has been married to his wife Lynn for 57 years and they currently reside on Fawn Lake in Shelton. They have four adult children: Melode (Shelton); Lanny (Shelton); Cara (Sammamish) and Tami (Woodinville). They have five Grandchildren and four Great-Grandchildren.
